Just a quick nod to a huge moment in music history.  It was 50 years ago today that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash in a blinding snow storm, after playing a show on tour in Iowa.  They obviously aren't the only musicians to perish in a plane crash, but history views this tragedy as having changed music forever.

This is a potentially misleading headline I suppose.  The hero in question is not some universally accepted hero, but he's certainly one of my all time top music heroes.

Last night PBS showed what is apparently an old documentary on Johnny Cash.  I'm so not a country fan, but being a musician I've always appreciated him and his influence on music today.  I really enjoyed seeing this inside perspective that followed he and wife June on what had to be a very early tour in his career which had him stopping at a childhood home, visiting his parents, and doing a show at a prison.  If it plays again you might consider catching it.

Larry Norman, while not a household name, is known/credited as the father of Christian rock music.  At the very least he was the cutting edge of the knife that chopped up the tired, old Christian music "industry" in the 1970's and raised not only the standards but also the style to reflect modern day music tastes, inspiring a whole new generation of people to investigate Jesus.  He was at the forefront of the "Jesus Movement" and many of today's Christian artists point to Larry as their inspiration.  Sadly, even though having been perhaps the single person who revolutionized modern Christian music, he barely earned enough to live on, and having no insurance, the last decade plus of severe heart problems drained every penny he ever made.  Larry died at home this past Sunday, Feb. 27, 2008 at the young age of 60 from heart failure.  Music in heaven will never be the same.  Read more here and here.

Dan Fogelberg died this past Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007 at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer.  He was only 56!  In the midst of all sorts of changing musical styles, Dan Fogelberg has been one of those constants, solid, always there, always great.  He was one of a kind, terribly underrated and underappreciated.
